Seeking out therapy is an individual choice. There are many reasons why people come to therapy. Sometimes it is to deal with long-standing psychological issues, or problems with anxiety or depression. Other times it is in response to unexpected changes in one's life such as a divorce, chronic disease diagnosis, or physical injury. Many seek the advice of counsel as they pursue their own personal exploration and growth. Working with a psychologist can help provide insight, support, and new strategies for all types of life challenges.

Here are some common reasons why many people seek counseling services:

Is a Memory Assessment Right for Me?

As we age, it is common for individuals to begin observing changes in their memory and cognitive abilities. However, there are times in which individuals wonder if the changes they are experiencing may be more indicative of a progressive dementia such as Alzheimer's Disease. A memory assessment may be helpful for you or a loved one if you can answer "yes" to several of the following questions:

  • Have you or others noticed changes in your memory that seem to moderately disrupt your daily life?
  • Have you or others noticed changes in your ability to plan or solve routine or novel problems?
  • Have you or others noticed an increased difficulty in recalling how to perform routine tasks and activities?
  • Have you ever found yourself in a familiar place but have had difficulty recalling where you were at or have found the place unfamiliar?
  • Have you or others noticed changes in your ability to visually interpret shadows/objects or changes to depth perception?
  • Have you or others noticed greater word finding difficulties and changes in your vocabulary?
  • Have you or others noticed a greater propensity for you to lose objects?
  • Have you or others noticed changes in your judgment and ability to make good decisions?
  • Have you or others noticed you becoming less social and more withdrawn from others?
  • Have you or others noticed changes to your mood or personality?

How Can Health Consultation Help Me?

A number of benefits are available from participating in psychotherapy. Psychologists can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for issues such as depression, anxiety, grief, relationship troubles, stress management, and creative blocks. Many people also find that a Psychologist can be a tremendous asset to managing personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, marriage issues, and the hassles of daily life. Through therapy, I can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. What Makes You Different From Other Counselors and Psychologists?

While there are many other therapists who do an excellent job working with people and helping them with their emotional needs, my advanced training has provided me with the unique ability to provide individuals with multifaceted care and understanding. My experience working in health clinics, hospitals, inpatient psychiatric units, naturopathic and allopathic medical schools, and neuropsychological assessment provides me with a depth of knowledge to not only help you therapeutically but to also help you with diagnosis, in-depth education, and holistic understanding of your situation. As one of only a few Psychologists in the Valley who work in Geropsychology, Neuropsychological Therapy, and Emotion Focused Interventions, many have found their experience to be more inclusive, with greater ability to meet their individual concerns.

Do You Accept Insurance? How Does Insurance Work?

I do not take in-network benefits for most insurance providers. However, I am happy to provide you with a receipt so that you can bill your insurance directly for out-of-network benefits. Depending on the individual insurance plan, many patients will be reimbursed for a percentage of their payment. To determine if you have out-of-network mental health coverage, the first thing you should do is check with your insurance carrier. Check your coverage carefully and find the answers to the following questions:

  • How much does my insurance pay for an out-of-network provider?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?
  • Are there certain reasons for counseling that are not covered by my insurance?

What If I Cannot Afford Your Services?

In addition to counseling, I am happy to provide you with referrals for other community resources that can complement my services and function as a supplement to counseling. This can often offset the cost as we may not need to meet as frequently. Also keep in mind that many individuals are often able to receive a partial reimbursement of their fees when they choose to submit a claim for out-of-network benefits with their insurance provider.

Is Medication a Substitute for Counseling?

image

In some cases a combination of medication and therapy is the right course of action. Working with your medical doctor you can determine what's best for you. However, it is well established that the long-term solution to mental and emotional
problems and the pain they cause cannot be solved solely by medication. Instead of just treating the symptom, therapy addresses the cause of our distress and the behavior patterns that curb our progress. You can best achieve sustainable
growth and a greater sense of well-being with an integrative approach to wellness.
